Novak Djokovic v Roberto Bautista Agut

The problem with most players facing the world no.1 is they are almost beaten before they take to the court. Any pre-match analysis shows most need to rely on divine intervention for any chance of success. The situation with Roberto Bautista Agut is different though. Having beaten Novak Djokovic twice already in 2019, he knows is capable of winning this one.

That's easier said than done though. Defeating the best player in the world in Shanghai (2016), Doha and Miami is a long way from centre court at the All England Club. Djokovic isn't messing around this week, the only set he has lost was a week ago in R3 in a tiebreak against the very promising Polish player Hubert Hurkasz. In the three events where Bautista Agut was able to beat this week's top seed, Djokovic had dropped a set in the previous round against mcuh weaker players, indicating that he wasn't at the peak of his form. On Wednesday, he destroyed David Goffin, the signs are ominent.

The h2h overall stands at 7-3 with the Spaniard's three victories all on hardcourt, their most recent clashes on that surface. They've met at a major tournament three times, and on each occasion, it went to four sets with either the first or second set going to Bautista Agut. That indicates Djokovic starts at a high level and then turns it up a notch when challenged.

Bautista Agut is playing as well as he can but he's been a clear favourite in each round so far and hasn't really been tested. This is a step up from Group 3 to Group 1 and while he might look in the contest for a while, expect Djokovic to career away as he does best. Can't back Djokovic at the price, but might be worth a small bet on the 3-1 result.

Best bet: Djokovic to win 3-1 at 14/5

Rafael Nadal v Roger Federer

Quite simply two absolute champions and precious little between them. While Rafael Nadal won easily on clay at Roland Garros, he had lost the previous five to Roger Federer, all in 2017. They've not met on grass since the final of 2008 when Nadal triumphed 9-7 in the fifth.

I could write a dissertation on this matchup but there's not much which hasn't been said before. At the prices, Federer has to be the bet.

Best bet: Federer to win at 6/5

Men’s Singles Final – Federer’s for the Taking

This year’s finalists in the Wimbledon men’s singles have been decided. Marin Cilic will make his first final appearance on Centre Court where he will face seven-time champion Roger Federer.

Number seven seed Cilic had to get past American Sam Querrey, the surprise conqueror of Andy Murray in the previous round, to reach the final. In their fifth career meeting and their third at Wimbledon it was a grueling five set battle between the players. The two big hitters matched each other in most departments but ultimately it was the second serve of Querrey which let him down. Cilic was more focused on his serve. An impressive 25 aces from the Croatian helped him reach the final of Wimbledon at his eleventh attempt.

A pre-tournament favourite and the number three seed, Roger Federer, secured his place in the final by defeating Tomas Berdych in straight sets. In fact the 35 year old Swiss player has not dropped a single set on his journey through the competition.

Berdych had beaten Federer previously on his way to the 2010 Wimbledon final but could not stop the juggernaut that is Federer this year. The Czech player was kept continuously off-balance by a variety of groundstrokes from Federer. Whenever Berdych looked like getting a foothold in the match Federer used his powerful serve to re-establish his dominance. The Wimbledon veteran now has a chance to win a record eighth Wimbledon singles crown.

You feel it will take something special from Cilic if he is to grab his first Wimbledon title on Sunday. Cilic has 17 tour titles to his name but the Croatian has only achieved one Grand Slam victory, which came at the U.S. Open back in 2014. If Federer makes any errors on his serve that might be where Cilic can look to put pressure on his opponent. He has won a high 133 second serve return points in the tournament so far and so Federer will need to be hitting the mark with his first serve.

Federer has decimated all before him on this fabulous Wimbledon run at the latter stage of his career. His last singles title here at the All England Club came back in 2012. That was also his last Grand Slam win until January this year when he beat Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open.

You can’t see anything coming between Federer and the trophy this year. Of his seven previous head-to-head meetings with Cilic he has been victorious in six of them, an 86% win rate. Federer last played Cilic at the quarter-final stage of Wimbledon in 2016, where he won in five sets.

As well as having to contend with a player on top form, Cilic will have to compete with Federer being a favourite of the Wimbledon crowd. Their support will be firmly behind the 18-time Grand Slam winner.

Federer is the bookmaker’s odds on favourite with Betvictor offering 2/11 on him getting that record eighth Wimbledon win. Cilic is available at 9/2 with Coral.

Women’s Singles Final – Williams to Turn Back Clock

This year’s women’s singles final at Wimbledon will be between veteran Venus Williams and the 2015 defeated finalist Garbine Muguruza.

Both players were dominant in their respective semi-final matches. Williams beat British No. 1 Johanna Konta in their fascinating encounter. Her serve, return game and groundstrokes proved too powerful for her opponent, with Williams winning in two sets.

Muguruza completely outplayed Magdelena Rybarikova in their semi-final, which only lasted 65 minutes. Rybarikova seemed to let nerves get the better of her and had no rhythm or focus to her play. Muguruza capitalised and ruthlessly dismissed the Slovakian 6-1 6-1.

Williams knows the atmosphere of a final at Centre Court extremely well. The 37 year-old has won the singles titles there five times previously and will be able to call upon her experience when the pressure is on. The American has not won a singles title at a Majors tournament since her last Wimbledon win in 2008 however.

Muguruza only won her first Grand Slam singles title very recently, taking the French Open crown in 2016. She will be looking to prove she can build on that and be a prominent player on the tour.

Williams and Muguruza have only dropped one set each on their way to the final and haven’t been giving much away. Although Williams tops the double faults table with 24 so far. Muguruza has better movement on the court favouring an attacking style and that may be where she will look to exploit the older player who employs a power game from the baseline.

Williams leads 3-1 in their previous head-to-head meetings, none of which have been on grass so this promises to be an intriguing encounter.

Williams is currently Evens to win with many firms including Ladbrokes who are also offering 2/1 on her to do it without dropping a set. They have odds of 4/5 for Muguruza to claim her first Wimbledon title.

In the early years the tournament was dominated by a few names, with William Renshaw winning six Wimbledon’s in a row from 1881 and Reginald and Lawrence Doherty taking nine titles between them from 1898-1906. After World War I things opened up a little as the great French players such as Rene Lacoste took charge, with Fred Perry winning Britain’s last three Wimbledons between 1934-36. After World War II Wimbledon was dominated by Americans and Australians, with only a win for Frenchman Yvon Petra (1946) an Egyptian (Jarolsav Drobny in 1954) and Spaniard Manuel Santana (1966) breaking their reign prior to the Open era.

The 1970s was a great time for Wimbledon, with Bjorg, McEnroe and Connors to the fore, whilst the 80s gave us the swashbuckling young German Boris Becker and his three titles. The 1990s undeniably belonged to Pete Sampras, who won seven Wimbledon crowns in eight years between 1993 and 2000. Then, of course, came the Swiss master, with Federer going close to Sampras with seven titles in 10 years.

Men’s tennis is certainly facing an interesting time right now. Many thought Djokovic and Murray would dominate 2017 but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Federer and Rafa are back but can a young gun finally win a Slam?

As to the women, with Serena on the sidelines pregnant and Kerber unable to dominate as expected, the game is also wide open. None of this makes betting easy but it sure does make things interesting.

• The ball boys and girls, or BBGs, as they are known, are paid up to £160 each. There are an equal number of boys and girls and they are paid equally. Each Wimbledon champion could blow their £2m cheque on 10,000 BBGs if they wanted and still have £400k change!
• The longest match in tennis history was played at Wimbledon, with John Isner beating Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set in a match played over three days at Wimbledon 2010. The match lasted over 11 hours, four hours longer than the second longest match ever.
• The first black winner of a singles title at Wimbledon was Althea Gibson in 1957. She won again in 1958. Just two years earlier she would have been unable to sit where she wanted on a public bus in America.
• In 1968, the first Wimbledon of the Open era, the winning man scooped £2,000, whilst the woman got just £750. Still more than I earn in two weeks to be fair though.
• Who will win Wimbledon? Tennis or croquet? The All-England club, where Wimbledon is held, was originally founded in 1868 as a croquet organisation, with tennis not coming along until 1975.
